ABS plastic regrind recovered from electronics housings

ABS Plastic Recovery and Aggregation

CompuPoint USA recovers ABS and PC-ABS plastic from end-of-life electronics at our R2v3 and RIOS™ certified facility in Lawrenceville, Georgia, and supplies it to plastic recyclers, compounders and molders. Contact us for current volumes and specifications.

What ABS is

ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) is a rigid, tough thermoplastic used for the outer cases of most computers, printers and office equipment. Each of its three building blocks adds something: acrylonitrile gives heat and chemical resistance, butadiene gives impact strength, and styrene gives stiffness and a smooth, glossy finish.

Because ABS is a thermoplastic, it softens when heated and hardens again when cooled. That means it can be ground, melted and molded into new parts, which makes it one of the most valuable plastics recovered from electronics.

Where we recover it

We separate ABS and PC-ABS from the electronics we receive for recycling, including:

  • TV and computer monitor back covers and housings
  • TFT & Flat Panel Display back covers and housings

Applications for recycled ABS

Sorted ABS plastic ready for recyclers and compounders

Once cleaned and compounded, recycled ABS and PC-ABS from electronics is used for durable, molded parts, often blended with virgin resin:

  • Electronics and electrical equipment: new computer, printer and monitor housings, power supply and adapter cases, and electrical enclosures
  • Office equipment: printer and copier parts, keyboard bases and accessory housings
  • Appliances: housings and internal parts for vacuums, small kitchen appliances and air conditioners
  • Automotive: interior trim, console parts and other non-structural components
  • Power tools and garden equipment: tool housings, battery cases and handles
  • Industrial and construction products: equipment covers, cable trays, tool boxes and storage crates
  • 3D printing: recycled ABS filament for prototyping and industrial printing

Because plastics from older electronics can contain flame retardants, recycled e-waste ABS and PC-ABS is generally not used for food-contact products or children's toys. Final suitability depends on the buyer's specification and testing.

Brominated flame-retardant (BFR) material is separated.
