HIPS plastic recovered from TV and monitor housings

HIPS Plastic Recovery and Aggregation

CompuPoint USA recovers HIPS plastic from end-of-life electronics at our R2v3 and RIOS™ certified facility in Lawrenceville, Georgia, and supplies it to plastic recyclers, compounders and molders. Contact us for current volumes and specifications.

What HIPS is

HIPS (high-impact polystyrene) is polystyrene toughened with a small amount of rubber (polybutadiene). Plain polystyrene is stiff but brittle; the rubber lets HIPS absorb knocks without cracking while keeping it light, low-cost and easy to mold.

That balance made it a standard material for the back covers of TVs and monitors and the housings of office equipment.

Like ABS, HIPS is a thermoplastic: it can be ground, melted and molded again into new parts.

Where we recover it

We separate HIPS from the electronics we receive for recycling, including:

  • TV and computer monitor back covers and housings
  • TFT & Flat Panel Display back covers and housings

Applications for recycled HIPS

Once cleaned and compounded, recycled HIPS from electronics is used for durable, low-stress molded parts, often blended with virgin resin:

  • Electronics and electrical equipment: new TV, monitor and appliance housings, and electrical enclosures
  • Office products: desk trays, organizers and equipment parts
  • Home and building products: picture frames, decorative moldings and trim
  • Horticulture: plant pots and nursery trays
  • Retail and packaging: clothes hangers and reusable industrial trays

Because plastics from older electronics can contain flame retardants, recycled e-waste HIPS is generally not used for food-contact products or children's toys. Final suitability depends on the buyer's specification and testing.
