Clear acrylic (PMMA) sheets recovered from LCD displays

PMMA (Acrylic) Recovery and Aggregation

CompuPoint USA recovers PMMA acrylic from end-of-life flat-screen displays at our R2v3 and RIOS™ certified facility in Lawrenceville, Georgia, and supplies it to plastic recyclers, compounders and acrylic producers. Contact us for current volumes and specifications.

What PMMA is

PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate), usually called acrylic, is a clear, rigid plastic that lets through more light than most glass and resists weathering and scratches. In LCD TVs and monitors it forms the light guide plate: a precisely made clear sheet that spreads the backlight evenly across the screen.

PMMA can be recycled two ways: ground and remolded like other thermoplastics, or heated to break it back down into its original building block (MMA monomer), which is then used to make new acrylic of near-virgin quality.

Where we recover it

  • Light guide plates from LCD and LED TVs and computer monitors
  • Clear display covers and lenses
  • Light diffuser panels from displays and commercial lighting

Applications for recycled PMMA

  • New acrylic: MMA monomer recovered by depolymerization, used to make new acrylic sheet and resin
  • Acrylic sheet and signage: signs, displays and point-of-sale fixtures
  • Lighting: light covers and diffuser panels
  • Building products: skylights, glazing panels and protective barriers
  • Automotive and appliance trim: decorative and non-optical molded parts

Final suitability depends on the buyer's specification and testing.

We keep light guide plates separate from diffuser sheets, which are sometimes polycarbonate rather than acrylic.
